Add a Medical Terminology Dictionary to Spell Checker - December 03, 1998

Biblioscape spell checker provides built-in spell checking capability. But if you collect references in certain fields that have lots of special terminology, the use of spell checker could be a tedious process. To solve this problem, Biblioscape comes with a utility program that let you build special dictionary. The following steps will show you how to add a dictionary of medical terms.

1. A popular medical dictionary can be found at http://www.ptcentral.com/university/medterms_zip.html Please download the zip file and unzip it to an empty directory.

2. Click here to download a Biblioscape utility for compiling dictionary. Unzip it to "c:\program files\biblioscape 3\tools\scompile.exe". Run scompile.exe and select file "MedTerm.dic" (that is unzipped in step 1) as "Input File". Give this dictionary a name and add some comment. Then click "Compile" button to produce the dictionary file "MedTerms.dct". After successful compilation, move "MedTerms.dct" to the "Tools" subdirectory of you Biblioscape installation.

3. Start Biblioscape, click menu command "Tools | Options...". Click tab "Others", and check the fields you want to do spelling check. Then close the window.

4. In Biblioscape, click menu command "Tools | Spell Check". Click "Options" button.

5. Click "Add" button, then select the dictionary "MedTerms.dct" you made in step 2. Do not forget to check the newly added dictionary to make it an active one. Click "OK" button to close the spell check configuration window.

6. Now you have compiled a list of medical terms into a dictionary file and added it to the spell checker. By following the same steps, you can make dictionaries for your own research fields. Or you can just add new words into user dictionary during spell checking process.
