Import Bibliographic Records From Papyrus Database - April 01, 1999
(October 24, 2001): The website below has a suite of four programs designed to help the user transfer Papyrus records to Biblioscape records. NOTE: this includes the importation of Papyrus notecards [WordPerfect and Word versions]. Developed by Hugh Gunz (mainly) and Martin Evans.
Instructions and 4 programs included in the zip file which is at:
http://individual.utoronto.ca/evans/instructions.html
If you are a Papyrus user and want to try out Biblioscape's advanced features, you can easily transfer your bibliographic records from a Papyrus database to a Biblioscape database. Follow the steps below to make the transfer.
Warning: You should avoid importing all of your Papyrus records into a single folder if there are several thousands or more of them. It will result in slow performance when opening this large folder. You can break up the export file and import the smaller files to different folders, or you can choose not to import records into any folder by unchecking the "To folder" checkbox during the importing process. Use Ctrl+R to retrieve all records.
1. If your version of Papyrus doesn't have the "RIS OUT" format library, you can download it from
http://www.researchsoftwaredesign.com/ftp/risout.flb2. Copy the format library into the directory where Pap.exe resides. Then copy the output format out of the library into the list of active formats using the commands:
Formats:
Library:
Find ENTER
Select RISOUT~1.flb, hit enter
Select YES
Select COPY from Library, enter
Type in RIS OUT.
The output format is now ready to use.3. Now make a RISOUT file:
Select LIST
Choose whatever subset of your database you desire by record number, etc. You will then be prompted "Is the above format information correct". Press "N", then enter "RIS OUT". Follow the instructions, answering as you choose until you reach "Choose on Device"
Select FILE
Select ASCII with line breaks
Name the file, hit enter.4. Now you are ready to import the RIS file into Biblioscape. In Biblioscape, go to "File | Import". Click "Browse" button to select the file you export in last step. On the "Tagged" tab, select import filter "RIS -- Reference Manager (Ver. 6, 7)" and click "Start" button to import.

*Import international ASCII characters from PAPYRUS:
Not sure there are many users still wanting to bring in PAPYRUS references, but...to get the international ASCII characters to come in correctly (e.g., umlaut o), do the following: 1. In PAPYRUS, list to file using "Word for Windows, or Word Perfect" not using ASCII with line breaks, 2. Use MS Word to open the resulting file, then "Save as" type "Plain Text (*.txt). Under "File Conversion" use Text encoding: Windows (Default) and do not select options to insert line breaks or allow character substitution, 3. In Biblioscape, import using the filter RIS from RIS OUT HPG. Bill B.
